The Atlantic-facing east coast is dramatic but too rough to snorkel, so every reef worth visiting — from Soufrière in the south to Rodney Bay in the north — faces west.
The headline spots are the reefs around Soufrière: Anse Chastanet, Anse Cochon and the beach beneath the Pitons at Sugar Beach. These sit inside or beside the Soufrière Marine Management Area (SMMA), a protected marine reserve where fish life is dense and the coral is healthy. If you only snorkel one reef in St Lucia, make it Anse Chastanet. Sugar Beach — officially Jalousie Beach — sits in the saddle directly between Gros Piton and Petit Piton, and snorkeling here means floating over coral with the two volcanic spires rising straight out of the sea on either side.
